The summer may be the time to relax, but it can also be perfect for upping the intensity. The Performing Arts School at bergenPAC’s virtual summer programs include two separate two-week dance intensives led by Dance Artistic Director Roberta Mathes.

These summer intensives are ideal for dancers, ages 10-18 who wish to improve their technical abilities and gain more confidence and a deeper understanding of their true potential.

“My goal is to make every one of my students physically strong, mentally focused and technically perfect,” Mathes says.

The intensives are designed to provide dancers with a deep training in the art of dance. They involve multiple classes each day in a variety of styles and subjects, including Ballet: Repertory, Character, Contemporary and Improvisation, Modern Jazz Technique, Flamenco, Audition and Film Techniques, Enrichment Workshops and Nutrition.

The sessions run from July 6-16 and Aug. 3-13 with classes held online Monday to Thursday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. An audition for placement is required for new students.

The summer intensives are based on the year-round pre-professional dance program at The Performing Arts School at bergenPAC, and are built on the Mathes Technique, which involves:

  • a total body warm up with an organic flow
  • injury prevention for all dancers
  • body alignment
  • improves balance & control
  • lengthens & tones muscles
  • develops co-ordination and use of musicality
  • increases longevity in dance
