Englewood Idol is put on by the Dr. John Grieco Scholarship Fund, which is a student-run non-profit 501(c)3 charity led by teacher Judy Aronson. The fund was founded in 2004 after the untimely death of Englewood Superintendent of Schools, Dr. John Grieco.  As a tribute to Dr. Grieco’s work in founding the [email protected] and encouraging excellence in the Englewood Public Schools, teachers, administrators, and parents donated the seed money to create the Dr. John Grieco Scholarship Fund.

The fund is organized and run as an academic class for students at Dwight Morrow High School and the [email protected], in which students learn how to promote and operate a successful charitable institution. The goal of the scholarship fund is to raise $22,000 each year to distribute as scholarships to deserving students at the two schools.

After an application process, a male and female student from grade in each school are chosen as winners of the scholarships. To date, 74 Englewood Public School students have received a combined amount of $105,000 in the six years that the scholarship fund has been in existence. The Community Chest serving Englewood, Tenafly and Englewood Cliffs generously funded $33,000 of the total raised. The remaining $72,000 was raised strictly by student fundraisers, ranging from Englewood Idol to car washes to 12-hour dance-a-thons to hot dog sales.

Supporters interested in donating to the Dr. John Grieco Scholarship Fund can make their tax-deductible donation check out to “The Dr. John Grieco Scholarship Fund” and mail to us at Grieco Scholarship, c/o Dwight Morrow High School, 274 Knickerbocker Road, Englewood, NJ 07631 or phone 201-294-0725 for further information.
